Prague, Vienna & Budapest: The Classic Itinerary

Three imperial capitals, one unforgettable route — planned properly

Quick answer: how many days for Prague, Vienna and Budapest?

The classic route needs 7–10 days: 3 nights Prague, 2–3 nights Vienna, 2–3 nights Budapest, travelling Prague → Vienna → Budapest (or the reverse) so you never backtrack. Between cities, choose the train (4 h and 2.5 h legs) or a private car with driver, which adds sightseeing stops — Český Krumlov, Mikulov, Bratislava — that the train simply passes by.

The route and the right order

Prague, Vienna and Budapest lie on a natural southeast line — the sensible order is Prague → Vienna → Budapest or the exact reverse, flying into the first city and out of the last (open-jaw tickets). Avoid routings that return through the middle city; they waste half a day each time.

Prague rewards the most time for atmosphere, Vienna for museums and music, Budapest for grandeur and thermal baths. If you have only 7 days, take a full first morning in Prague and give Budapest the final two nights — its riverside lights are the perfect finale.

Day-by-day skeleton (8 days)

  • Days 1–3 · Prague — Old Town & Charles Bridge, Prague Castle circuit, day-trip morning to Kutná Hora or Karlštejn
  • Day 4 · travel Prague → Vienna with a Český Krumlov or Telč stop (private car day)
  • Days 4–6 · Vienna — Ringstrasse & Hofburg, Schönbrunn, Kunsthistorisches Museum, an evening concert
  • Day 6 · travel Vienna → Budapest with a Bratislava old-town stop (2.5 h drive total)
  • Days 6–8 · Budapest — Castle Hill & Fisherman's Bastion, Parliament, Széchenyi or Gellért thermal baths, evening Danube cruise

Trains or a private multi-day car?

The trains on this corridor are good: Prague–Vienna ≈ 4 h, Vienna–Budapest ≈ 2.5 h. If your itinerary is strictly city-to-city, trains win on price for 1–2 travellers.

A private multi-day car with driver changes what the trip IS: the travel days become sightseeing days (Krumlov, Mikulov wine country, Bratislava), luggage moves door to door, and small towns between the capitals — unreachable by rail without hours of connections — come into play. For families and groups of 3+, the per-person cost difference shrinks to less than the taxis you'd otherwise pay at six stations.

Between the capitals: your options

The two travel legs decide the character of the whole trip:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days enough for Prague, Vienna and Budapest?

Seven days is the workable minimum (3+2+2 nights). Eight to ten days lets you add day trips like Kutná Hora, Schönbrunn at leisure, or a Danube Bend excursion.

Which order is best — Prague first or Budapest first?

Either direction works; pick by flight prices (open-jaw: fly into one end, out of the other). The geographic line Prague → Vienna → Budapest avoids all backtracking.

What can a private car add that trains can't?

The stops between: Český Krumlov, Telč, Mikulov wine country or Bratislava on the travel days, hotel-door luggage service, and one fixed price for the whole group — the travel legs become sightseeing days instead of transit.

Do I need three currencies?

Czechia uses crowns, Austria euros, Hungary forints — but cards work almost everywhere in all three capitals; carry a little cash for markets.

Does CARIVIO offer this as a package?
