For a stay in the city, no: the centre is a maze of one-way lanes, pedestrian zones and residents-only parking, and a car spends the day in a garage costing more than a taxi. For day trips and journeys to Vienna, Dresden or Salzburg the answer depends on how many of you there are and how much you value not driving. Here are the real costs of both.
The quick answer
Inside Prague, use public transport and the occasional car with driver. For one or two day trips, a private car with driver is usually cheaper than a rental once you add fuel, vignettes, parking and insurance, and it is always simpler. Rent a car only if you are touring for a week or more and want complete independence.
What a rental car really costs
- Daily rate: a compact from a major brand at the airport typically costs the equivalent of 1 000 to 2 000 CZK per day in season, plus insurance excess reduction, plus a young-driver or one-way fee if applicable.
- Motorway vignette: Czech motorways need an electronic vignette (10-day, 30-day or annual), bought online before you drive onto the D-roads. Austria and Slovakia have their own vignettes; Germany has none for cars.
- Fuel: a Prague to Vienna round trip is about 660 km, roughly 45 litres for a compact.
- Parking: the centre of Prague is blue (residents) and orange or green (short-term, paid) zones; hotel garages charge per night, and the Old Town is closed to non-permit cars. Vienna and Salzburg have the same short-term zones.
- Cross-border: check that the rental allows travel to Austria, Germany and Hungary; some categories exclude it or charge extra.
- Your time and attention: unfamiliar traffic rules, trams with priority, and a strict 0.0 alcohol limit in the Czech Republic.
What a private driver costs
